Keokuk, Iowa – a charming city located in the southeastern part of the state – is getting ready to celebrate its 175th anniversary. The city, which was incorporated on Dec. 13, 1847, has come a long way since its founding. And the city’s officials have set up a four-day celebration that’ll put the spotlight on Keokuk’s rich history and vibrant community life.
Mayor Kathie Mahoney, who is thrilled about the upcoming festivities, says there’s something for everyone. “We’ve worked really hard to make sure our 175th anniversary celebration has something for everyone. Children, adults, and seniors – everyone in the family will have a great time,” she revealed.
So, what’s in store for Keokuk’s Sesquicentennial Celebration? Here’s a rundown of the activities:
Saturday, July 1 – The celebration will kick off with a 5K run and one-mile walks. The city’s National Cemetery will also be open to the public from 1 to 3 p.m. for tours. The cemetery, which is situated on a hillside overlooking the Mississippi River, contains graves of soldiers from the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War.
Sunday, July 2 – The day will be packed with events that’ll showcase Keokuk’s rich history. The Historic Miller House and the city’s train depot will be open for tours from noon to 5 p.m. Visitors will have a chance to step back in time and see what life was like in Keokuk during the 1800s. The Keokuk Historical Society will also host presentations about Keokuk’s history from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Lodge. Attendees can learn about the city’s notable figures, historic landmarks, and achievements. And music lovers won’t be left out – community church choirs will perform from 6 to 8 p.m.
Monday, July 3 – The Lee County Labor Temple will be cooking and serving a free pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. The Keokuk Aquatic Center will also be open from noon to 6 p.m. for those who want to take a dip without worrying about an admission fee. The Historical Society’s presentations at the Odd Fellows Lodge will also continue from 6 to 9 p.m. But things will heat up in the evening with the Southside Boat Club hosting live music and a boat parade from 8 to 11 p.m.
Tuesday, July 4 – The much-anticipated final day of the celebration will take place at Rand Park, with live music performances from 5 to 9 p.m. The festivities will cap off with a stunning fireworks display.
